Brigitte at 1 year

Our sweet, happy baby Brigitte will soon turn a whole year old… which makes me sad and happy at the same time. I don’t know where the time goes, but here we are again- she’s just learning and growing so much. She’s the happiest baby I know, always smiling and content. I can see part of her little personality coming through already- she’s mellow and patient, sweet and kind. She’s the perfect fit into our little family. I just love my Bridgie baby.

Here are a few facts and milestones about Brigitte at 1 year:

- Has started to eat solid food, like crackers, soft fruits and pasta
- Plays peek-a-boo with us
- Still doesn’t sleep through the night…
- Still nursing, but bites mommy a lot!

- Started walking 2 weeks before 1st birthday- she took those precious first steps while I was away at work. I cried :(

Natalie at 2.5 years

Our big girl is now two and a half years old! It’s hard to believe. In the last few months, her language and skills have sharpened so much. She’s certainly very assertive and confident, often telling everyone what to do... but at the same time, she’s very loving and eager to help others. She adores her baby sister (“Boojie” as she often calls her) and loves to help, whether it’s giving baby her paci or helping me stir a batch of cookies. She is really becoming a big kid fast!

Here are a few facts and milestones about Natalie at 2.5years:

- She talks a lot more and more clearly, but still can’t make out everything she says
- Fully potty trained!
- Says “pappies” for panties
- Loves to drink “coco mik” in the morning with a pink straw

- Often asks for a “surprise”- usually a cookie or treat of some kind
- Favorite foods- fruit snacks, yogurt, applesauce, cookies
- No more paci! :)
- Hates time out, but it really works for her when necessary
- Likes to ride in the big part of the cart at the store

- Outgrowing some of her smaller 2T size clothes
- Wears a 7/8 size shoe
- Refuses to wear pants to bed
- Has started to wear hair half up, in addition to one or two “ponies”

- Still enjoys watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Little Einsteins
- Brings a “friend” with her nearly everywhere- usually baby doll, Little People bus, Minnie or Daisy

She's Arrived!!

Brigitte Lee was born on Monday, June 4th after a relatively smooth delivery. I went to bed on Sunday night feeling crampy and just very “blah.” I was awake every few hours to try to get comfortable (as usual) and I recall hearing Eric getting up to start getting ready for work. It was strange because I remember thinking to myself, “I should just tell Eric to stay home today” because I was feeling so lousy and I knew I still had to take care of Natalie. Plus, I had a thought in the back of my mind that the 4th would be the day! But since I wanted him to save up as much sick time as possible to use after the birth, I didn’t say anything.

As it turned out, it was the day! After I got out of bed, I noticed that I lost my mucus plug- which was the first sign that things could be happening! Then after getting Natalie up and fed at about 7am, I started feeling what I thought were tiny contractions- just small feelings of tightness in and around my lower tummy. I wasn’t really convinced they were the real thing, but by about 8am they were consistent. They weren’t exactly comfortable at this point, but they weren’t unbearable either, so I still had my doubts. Nonetheless, I decided to call Eric at work to come home. I was very worried that if this were it, things would progress faster than I’d want and then I’d be in a position where I couldn’t care for Natalie. So after I reached Eric and gave him an update, he made his way home. As soon as he arrived, he called his mom to come over (she was our on-call person to take care of Natalie) and I hopped in the shower- I didn’t know when my next one would be and I wanted to be clean!

At this point during my shower, contractions were about 3-4 minutes apart and only lasted maybe 30 seconds at most. I’d hunch over in the shower and let the hot water run against my back, which was somewhat relaxing. I took my time in the shower and then dressed myself and made sure my hospital bag was ready to go. Eric and I said our goodbyes to Natalie and left for the hospital at about 9:30am. Even though contractions were steady, consistent and kind of painful at this point, I still had fears that it was just false labor and we’d be sent right back home! There was no questioning with Natalie, as my water broke before contractions started. I was surprised it was different this time around.

During our drive to the hospital in Walnut Creek, it started to rain! I thought it was so strange to be raining in June! As Eric drove safely along the highway, I was thankful that we’d passed the morning commute. I think I had a good 4 or 5 contractions during the 15 minute drive.

Then we made our way to labor and delivery, where we were checked in and sent to triage. At about 10am, I was checked by the triage nurse who informed us I was 3.5cm dialated and about 95% effaced. So they admitted us and said they would move us into a labor room. We spent a good hour or two In triage filling out paperwork in-between contractions as we waited for the room to be prepared. Finally around noon we were moved.

Contractions were painful at this point, so much so that I just cried and kind of moaned through them. I remember Eric pointing out that I’d kind of twitch and shake my hands and feet as well. I requested an epidural shortly after we were settled into the room and luckily the anesthesiologist came quickly (after multiple attempts to secure an IV, yet again). The nurse gave me an intravenous dose of fentanyl before the epidural was administered so I’d remain still. And it wasn’t bad at all- again, I thought getting the IV line secured was more painful! Right after the epidural was secured, the nurse checked my progress at about 12:45pm and we were happy to learn that I was at 6cm already!

Then we just kind of hung out and tried to relax a little, now that I was way more comfortable. Eric had lunch and we watched the monitor screen to my right make hills and mountains of my contractions even though I hardly felt them! Then my water broke at maybe 3pm, so I paged the nurse. She did a quick check and told me that I was at 9.5cm.

It went fast from this point- I immediately started shaking and shivering, which the nurse said was common during transition. She then paged for the midwife, Christiana, and once she arrived and was prepped, I started pushing. The nurse and midwife coached me through each contraction, while remaining calm and positive. It wasn’t stressful at all, which I really appreciated. They gave me oxygen in-between pushes and said that I was pushing very well. It wasn’t quite painful until I started to feel her head crowning- then I felt that excruciating burning sensation until she finally popped out at 4:11pm.

The midwife immediately placed her on my chest and the first thing I noticed was that she was so purple and had such chubby cheeks! Eric studied her face (which was facing toward him) and I remember him making some sort of comment that she had a “butt chin,” which freaked me out. But once I got a good look at her face, I saw that she did not- maybe a little dimple, but definitely no butt chin! And she looked so different from Natalie! Rounder face, more hair, smaller eyes, longer fingers and toes- I was expecting them to look more similar for some reason.

Eric cut the umbilical cord, which was unusually large and thick according to the medical staff. But it served its purpose! Then we gave a go at nursing before she was taken away for a few minutes to be weighed and measured. I was shocked to learn that she weighed in at 8 pounds, 1 ounce and measured 20 inches- a full pound heavier than Natalie but interestingly the same length. We figured all that extra weight must have been in those chubby cheeks!

While Eric snapped pictures of Brigitte being checked out, the midwife worked on my repair... sadly, I suffered the same as after Natalie, which I was hoping to avoid. Oh well. And I was starving! I hadn’t eaten anything but a little muffin early that morning, so my nurse brought me a dinner plate of chicken, steamed veggies, soup and some juice. Kaiser fare is edible at best, but I scarfed most of it down. Then of course I immediately threw all of it up :(. I should have known that my body was in complete shock and tried to eat a little slower!

After a little while, we made a few phone calls to tell everyone of Brigitte’s arrival and invited some of our immediate family to come visit. Elaine was the first to come and hold her, followed by my Dad, Sally, Sarah, JoEllen and of course Natalie. We were moved to a recovery room before most everyone arrived and it was so sweet to see Natalie get excited over her new baby sister- she immediately reached out to hold her!

Elaine brought a ton of goodies and gifts, as to be expected from Elaine- a beautiful handmade baby blanket for Brigitte, a little Crayola coloring set for Natalie and a big bag of homemade chocolate chip cookies for me! I just love my sister, she spoils me so much!

Visiting hours were soon over so everyone headed home, including Eric, who spent the night at our house with Natalie. Since everything had gone so smoothly, there was really no reason for him to stay overnight with me (not to mention sleep in an uncomfortable futon chair). Plus, I wanted him to be there for Natalie to keep her on her usual routine. Elaine stayed with me in my recovery room for a while longer and we just chatted and held the new baby before we called it a night. It was nice to have the company.

Early the next morning, after a good few hours of sleep, Brigitte was checked and taken for a newborn hearing test. Then Eric and Natalie came later that morning and we tried to enjoy our “celebration lunch”- a nice meal that Kaiser gives to all new parents. But it was hard to manage with both kids, especially Natalie, who was nearing her nap time. So they returned home and I told them I’d call when Brigitte and I were ready to be discharged.

Then we just waited for both Brigitte and I to be cleared. We both checked out happy and healthy, so we were able to leave the hospital that day at around 5pm, just about 24 hours after Brigitte officially arrived. I was so glad to be leaving- I missed Eric and Natalie and I just wanted to get up out of that horribly uncomfortable hospital bed and make a mad dash to my shower at home!

Brigitte didn’t make a peep in the car on the way home. I arrived home to a lavishly decorated house, complete with balloons, streamers, signs and flowers (courtesy of Elaine, with Eric’s help) which was so nice! I was so excited that Brigitte was being celebrated, as she and all new babies should be. And then we resumed life as usual, as best we could. We gave Natalie a bath and put her down to bed while Brigitte slept.

And just like that, we were a new little family of 4 :)

Easter Pictures

Then (Easter 2011) and Now (Easter 2012)...

How time flies! On Wednesday, we had a nice little break in the rain so it was the perfect day to attempt to take Natalie’s Easter pictures. I took some great shots last year at Heather Farms and then sent out some really cute Easter greeting cards and I’m eager to do so again. Unfortunately the cherry blossoms weren’t quite blooming as I had hoped, but I wasn’t too upset about it since we actually caught a full day without the rain. I picked out a lovely little dress at babyGap back before the holidays just for the occasion. We kind of just let her run about around the garden area as I tried to take some good pictures. It was hard though! I only have a few of her actually looking at the camera. Oh well. They mostly turned out!

Bumps, Bruises, Toddler Forks & 29 Weeks

Natalie has started to really run around now and she’s started to get little bumps and bruises galore! She trips and slips a lot on the hardwood floors and falls into things a lot. Her knees seem to constantly have little bruises on them! Luckily it’s nothing too bad, but just the other day, she slipped and smacked into the edge of her bedroom door and got a nice little red mark on her face. Poor baby :(

Natalie has just about a full mouth of teeth now! We’re just waiting on two bottom eye teeth to finish poking their way through. It’s strange to see her with so many teeth… reminds me again of how big she’s getting. She really is a little toddler now I suppose- I’ve been so reluctant to officially call her that. She’s still a baby to me!

We’ve also transitioned to exclusively solid finger foods. She likes scrambled eggs, soft boiled veggies, pasta, and lots of fruits like grapes, bananas and oranges. But she’s also refusing lots of things all of the sudden, I’m thinking because of the texture. She won’t eat cooked rice or chicken, which she loved before in pureed form. But I continue to offer it to her in hopes that she’ll start eating it again. A couple weeks ago, I picked out some toddler forks and spoons for her to practice with and she’s been doing quite well with them! She mostly stabs at her bowl until she gets something on her fork, but then she carefully brings it to her mouth and eats it. I’ve seen her do this with both hands, so I’m not sure yet whether she’ll be left or right-handed.

In new baby news, I felt her hiccup for the first time last Wednesday night- we were out to eat with JoEllen and Patrick when I noticed this odd feeling down low. Hiccups are really unmistakable! I’ve felt many ever since, just like with Natalie. I always comment that I feel pretty much the same this time around, even though I always hear that every pregnancy is unique. However, this pregnancy has been slightly different in that I’ve been miserable with heartburn! I had some with Natalie, but not until quite a bit later. I don’t feel much like eating since everything causes that horrendous burning sensation and sometimes it’s so intense that it’s nauseating. So I’ve been eating lots of ice-cream- that’s one thing that sounds decent.

I had my 29/30 week check-up this past Monday, the 26th. I met with my midwife once again and she seemed rather concerned about my lack of weight gain. I was surprised, given all the ice-cream I’ve been eating! (I don’t use a scale at home, so it’s always news to me when I get weighed). I have been trying to eat well, but I know I can always do better. And trying to keep up with Natalie all day is a work out. So I was instructed to eat more protein at every meal (and plenty of ice-cream too, for the heartburn). Then I had a quick ultrasound to confirm baby is head down, although I had no doubt of it because of her frequent bouts of hiccups- I can very easily tell where her head is. She looked so big on the ultrasound screen! It’s amazing how much she’s grown in the last 10 weeks or so, since I last saw her in ultrasound form. Then I talked with my midwife about our plans for Natalie during the birth, since she cannot be with us in the hospital overnight. We’ll have to come up with a good plan for her and most likely enlist the help of Auntie and grandma to help watch her.

We’ve decided it’s time to start setting up the house for new baby. I plan to borrow Elaine’s bassinet for a while, since it’s on wheels and can be easily moved from room to room. That’s one thing that I regret about the Co-sleeper that we have- it was great for nighttime, and it’s good for traveling as well, but it’s use is kind of limited since it’s so large and immobile. I wish I would have registered for the slightly smaller one on wheels instead. I also have to get our infant swing back from Elaine- luckily she’s been nice enough to store some of our things for us, since we were so tight on space at the old condo! Having a garage now is really a great thing.

I do feel kind of bad that new baby doesn’t have many new items of her own… pretty much everything is being re-used! I bought her a new coming home outfit and a couple other clothing items, but Elaine and I have tubs and tubs of baby clothes that were hardly used! I feel like there was so much set-up and preparation to do last time and now there’s really not much at all. But maybe this is a good thing, so I can focus instead on the transition to two and enjoying the newborn stage once again- I’m looking forward to soaking it in. It does go by so fast.

Girl's Outing to Sonoma

On Friday the 23rd, our good friend Peter organized an overnight girl’s trip for Lisa and a few friends for her birthday. He arranged for the four of us to take an Italian cooking class at this inn/culinary school called Ramekins in Sonoma and then he booked a little spa retreat the next morning. It was odd to leave Natalie for that long- the longest I’ve been away from her is an 8-hour workday. But I knew she’d be fine with Daddy, she really enjoys her one-on-one time with Daddy.

The weather was really nice that Friday, so we enjoyed a nice stroll around the square in downtown Sonoma where had lunch and gelato. The cooking class was scheduled for that evening and I had no clue what to expect. But it was really fun! After a quick introduction from the chef and a tutorial for how to make dough, we made foccaccia bread and rolled and cut fresh pasta. There were about 25 people in the class, so the other groups focused on other dishes, like the meat, torte and dessert. Then at about 9:30pm, we finally ate! I told Eric before we left that I’d at least try everything… even though I don’t eat a lot of meat. But when would I have the chance to try such fancy fare again?

First course was this tuna/anchovy mixture stuffed in grilled peppers and served on a spring mix salad. Then came our delicious bread, which was easily my favorite part of the meal- it seriously contained at least 4 cups of olive oil! Next was the fresh pasta served with a three-meat white sauce consisting of veal, beef and pork. The pasta noodles were so good! Then came the veal topped with prosciutto and served with a quiche-like torte filled with butternut squash. I tried a bite of the veal and it was tender and tasted good I guess. The torte was lovely. Dessert was a whipped espresso mousse that I tried a small taste of. Also good, but it was strong!

I was pooped after the class! The rooms at the inn were really nice and I was hoping for a good night’s rest. Unfortunately I kept waking up! Probably because I’m just not used to sleeping without a baby in very close proximity. The next morning, we had waffles and fancy coffee/tea at a cute little cafĂ© before going to the nail salon for manicures and pedicures. That was the first spa service I’ve had during this pregnancy! It was nice to have someone else do my toenails for a change. Then we headed back home. It was a really nice trip! We all kept commenting how thoughtful Peter was for planning such a nice outing for his wife and her friends. He did well!

Double Bumble!

After much searching, we are the proud new owners of a lightly used double bumble! What the heck is that, you ask? It’s an awesome double stroller made by Bumbleride- it’s really called an Indie Twin, but I think the name “double bumble” has stuck.

After finding out baby #2 was on the way, one of the only items I felt the need to thoroughly research was a good double stroller. I researched absolutely everything for Natalie- the car seat, the high chair, the diapers- but now, we get to reuse nearly everything, which is just great! So for the past couple months, I’ve been reading reviews and testing out samples at baby stores, trying to figure out what kind of double would work best for us. I had a basic list of requirements for the new stroller: it must have all-terrain tires (an absolute must- typical plastic tires just plain suck. They ware very easily and result in a bumpy, uncomfortable ride), it must be compatible with our infant car seat (a Chicco Keyfit 30), it must be somewhat compact and fold small enough to fit into our car (a Nissan Murano), and it must not cost a fortune. But I soon found that these seemingly basic requirements were hard to come by in a double!

I learned that there are two basic types of double strollers- tandem and side-by-side, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. It seemed most tandems were long and hard to steer, but narrow enough to fit through small spaces whereas side-by-side models were wider and bulkier, yet easier to push. And all of them were enormous! Plus, my options were very limited based on my need for all-terrain tires and compatibility with the infant car seat. I looked at Mountain Buggy, Baby Jogger and a few other “high end” brands. I was almost sold on the City Select by Baby Jogger- a compact tandem that seemed just perfect! But upon sampling, I found that Natalie barely fit in the seat! Plus, it was super pricey… I couldn’t justify the cost for a stroller that Natalie would outgrow in no time.

Anyway, I kept coming back to Bumbleride. We already own the single Indie and just love using it with Natalie. It’s versatile enough to take out on a light jog or out and about shopping. It’s a breeze to push, it folds compactly, and it worked great with the infant seat when she was smaller. It was so convenient to just pop the seat out of the car on onto the stroller when she was napping. It made outings much easier! So naturally, I was intrigued to sample the double bumble and see how it measured up.

But I couldn’t find one at the local baby stores! And double bumbles don’t come cheap- new ones sell for at least $600 and that classified as a fortune for us (I guess I was lucky to nab our single Bumbleride on clearance for about $250- which seemed like a lot at first, but we’ve found it to be well worth the cost). So I started scouring Craigslist and Ebay in search of a decent used one and I finally found one! In the color I wanted to boot- plain black and grey. There are some weird colors out there, like orange and lime green that I just don’t think I could learn to live with. The sellers were a nice couple in the city who were selling theirs for about half the cost of a new one, so I called and we arranged to meet that night. It was a terrible drive in pouring rain both there and back, but luckily Natalie took a little nap in the car. We were happy to find that it was in great condition- they claim to only have used it twice, as their older daughter now prefers to walk wherever they go. And they had all the original attachments and accessories along with the owner’s manual. SOLD!

So here’s our new double bumble!

Ready for two with our Chicco car seat installed on one side

Four air-filled tires make for a lovely smooth ride

Full canopies

Big under basket for lots of goodies

It's a little cumbersome to fold, but what double isn’t… at least it fits in the car! And there's even a little space left over for groceries, so I'm happy :)
